Mostly disappointed because I won’t be able to potter about Haldon forest on Wednesday because I doubt leg will have recovered enough from the battering I stupidly gave it a few days ago on a new gravel walking route. Ho hum.

In an effort to stop stealing Alice’s #Coros #SmartWatch to record my training walks/hikes/shuffles, I chiselled the wallet out for a new @corosglobal Pace 4. Very nice so far, after Alice was able to adjust nylon strap to my tiny wrist with her sewing machine skills.

Pushing the limit all the time means you sometimes cross it. Trevor did not enjoy yesterday’s hardcore beating on rough gravel - thankfully no breaks, but extremely bruised. So back in the wheelchair for a few days. Glad no serious damage, and useful lessons learned re walking surfaces. Onwards.

Almost exactly 1 mile done. Pics don’t show how grey, drizzly, windy it was. Also, path was loose gravel that shifted so every step was really hard-going. Exhausted. But, another session done. Onwards.

Recovery after yday’s hiking adventure. Heavy legs, tight/sore lower back, but Trevor and Roger pretty much fine. I am glad. Protein, stretching, an ‘active recovery’ potter around Morrison’s. Driving, walking and weights tomorrow. The adventure continues. Onwards.

I’ve had these legs for 3.5 weeks now and, in addition to pushing my walking, today I got to test my Leki hiking poles, Yomp rucksack, and more lovely Albion Cycling kit - all were great. #StayOutsideForLonger

First off-road walk done, and a new distance PB at 1.75 miles / 2.8km. Started off very grey and drizzly, but brightened/dried up. Extremely enjoyable, but final 0.2 miles the leg strength and control had completely gone - jelly legs. Solid progress. Onwards.

Walking, physio, failed bikefit, and weights today. Long (for me) off-road walk tomorrow. Basically a grind currently. Trying to rebuild a rusty body poorly-used for well over a decade. Lots of fatigue. Lots of protein. Lots of sleep.

A morning spent with the prosthetist and physio at EMC. Happy with progress, and agreed on a staggered return of my missing height. Few inches in 3 weeks, and final few after #OuchTo5k finish 11th July. Not as fast/aggressive as I’d like, but #rules. Debatably poor pic as being blinded by sun.

A judge's report on a document submitted to the court, but based on an AI's false account of the law. The solicitor involved spent 59 pages' worth of chat with an LLM rather than looking up statute. Then used AI again to write an apology to the court. A fascinating story, coolly told.

Walk #8 - out in the wild. After dropping my friend Graeme off at the #GreatWestRun we went to pre-celebrate what must be an imminent PB for him, at #TheCommonBeaver on #MagdalenRd.

Meant to be writing a long overdue blog today about all the things that have happened recently, but struggling. Yesterday’s ‘epic’ walk took it out of me, so retreating into food, stretching, rest. Should be much better tomorrow.

Another reason for today’s 2k epic (albeit with numerous rests) is it’s the 1yr anniversary of my first leg amputation (Trevor’s bday). Alice baked him a delicious coffee & walnut cake. #winning #StayOutsideForLonger #amputee

Walk #7, on 2 week anniversary of the #prosthetics, I wanted to set a 2k goal which was… harder than expected. Roger and Trevor and legs fine - but lower back v weak/sore. Thinking lordosis, anterior pelvic tilt, and poor technique so much to work on! #StayOutsideForLonger

Prosthetics appt on 29th to discuss adding missing 3” height back onto leg, and correct L foot canting outward v slightly. Until then, building comfort technique, distance. At about 1.5k now. This Fri will be 2weeks and aiming for 2k. Have had an idea for a fun target. Onwards.

Walk #6 and testing/training in some new environments. Today we explored Morrison’s, as a long interval with lots of standing browsing shelves and no seated rest, then went for a recovery coffee.

Walk #5 - into #Exeter city centre in search of #coffee. Endurance training. 1.1k total, broken into 3 sections of about 400m each. Tired but happy. Haven’t walked that far in about 4 years. Haven’t walked that far without foot pain in about 18 years. Humbling. Onwards. #perspective #progress

No prosthetic practice today. Roger and Trevor need a rest after a busy week. Everything going extremely well, apart from the missing 3” height and the fact I can’t tinker with bikefit until that’s sorted. So… grateful for progress. Frustrated for more. Watch this space.

Also… outside. Whole different ball game. Rough ground, gradients, sun. Uphills are really hard. Finding a benefit in looking up, going hard/fast, and relying on the momentum a bit.

First of the unaided hallway reps. Yes, it does look a bit drunken sailor. But it’s a start.

Walk #4, and the 1 week anniversary of getting both prosthetics. Balance, gait, and speed all improving. I am doing hallway reps as a warm-up for *gasp* going outside. Where uneven ground, gradients, and disorienting sunshine await.

Walk #3 today- technique and comfort coming along in leaps and bounds. Very satisfying and encouraging. Less good- first tentative test of the turbo trainer. Needed massive saddle height reduction. Turns out I’m 3 inches shorter. That’s not what I was promised. Ringing prosthetist tomorrow.

Amazing the things people prioritise

2nd ever walk with both prosthetics, and 2nd walk generally in 11 months and 21 days. I think we can regard the 18 months of physical prep a success. Long way to go improving technique and fitness, but a solid start.
