in 1941 the last events of the Tembien convoy battle play out in the Mediterranean. At night, the Malta Wellingtons strike Tripoli. Sgt. Brandwood and his crew, shot down the day before, are rescued by HM/Sub Utmost. They are the only survivors of three Blenheim crews shot down in the attack.

A visit to Winchester’s military museums, this afternoon. Sadly, I didn’t give myself enough time to really do them justice, but at least it means I’ll have to return to this lovely city.

I have this half-serious theory that the Germans could sense, somewhat subconsciously, what was to happen so they left their traces everywhere. And I mean it, I find them literally everywhere.

The fascinating feature of this newsreel was how long it took to get to Barbarossa. After the football, came the visit of the Japanese ambassador to Hannover. The Nazi pulled out all the show piece effects. Hiroshi Ōshima was made a freeman of Göttingen.

There's a story about the SA's shambolic drunken appearance at the end of Hitler's victory parade on 30 January 1933. Hindenburg congratulated the chief-of-staff and said: 'How well your men are marching, and what a lot of prisoners they appear to have taken!'
