The public really needs to understand this. Every university system in the world rests on public funding, there has never been an alternative model at any time in history. We have universities for literally the same reason that we have roads and armies.

People always moved around. Azizos, son of Agrippa, moved 3500 km from a village of Kaprozabadaion near Apamea in Syria to Trier in what is now Germany, where he died and was buried and commemorated at the end of the 4th century. Multilingual, multicultural and highly connected Late Antiquity. 1/
