Today is exciting! My #HEMA club @swordwind.bsky.social signed a lease on our own location after years of sharing space in a CrossFit gym. This will let us expand classes and it will be cool to have a place I go practice on off hours. ⚔️

#OhMyHorror challenge 2026 week 2: Hotel Horror - The Haunted Hotel (2021). A anthology with 8 short stories all set in the same haunted hotel in different time periods. Listed as a horror comedy but was neither scary nor really funny. Cheesy in a bad way and not even fun to watch. (2 out of 10)

#OhMyHorror challenge 2026 week 1: Body Horror - The Substance (2024). I watched it before but still enjoyed it this second time around. Great body horror effects, felt the story could have been a bit tighter, did not need to be 2h15m. (7 out of 10)

Signed up for my #HEMA clubs competition prep class again this year. It was super useful last year and I have found I really need the group, almost peer pressure, to keep me accountable and active when it comes to regularly exercising. Left to my own devices I just wont 🫠

We had our holiday party this past weekend. The theme was "It's a Wonderful Knife". We had tons of food and snacks, did a white elephant gift exchange, played dagger Pictionary, and did some blindfolded jingle bell dagger duels. Everyone had a great time! Hope everyone has a happy holiday season!

Molly (our new dog) and I were chilling on the couch this morning for a bit before I had to go get ready for work. Fry (the cat) walked over and decided he wanted lap time as well. For having known each other less than a week everyone was amazingly chill and we had a good interaction.

Meet Molly. We adopted her from a rescue and she was dropped off to us this past Saturday. She is (most likely) a Treeing Walker Coon hound or similar. She is setting in alright, a bit of whining during the day but blessedly sleeps through the night.

Switched to using my laptop to decode the SSTV signals from the ISS and it works so much better. #Hamradio

First try at capturing SSTV images from the international space station using just a HT radio and my software on my phone. It’s messy but I’m just surprised it worked at all. #hamradio

So I knew I messed up my knee landing wrong last night during our grappling class but I ALSO either messed up my wrist at the same time and didn't notice it and/or just slept wrong on it so that's fun. #HEMA over 40 is great! ⚔️😵

I have an app on my phone that lets me know when the ISS is overhead. I was able to use the antenna I made and a 35$ handheld to hear signals from the space stations repeater. No astronauts, but was able to hear signals from people in VA and OH that were trying to make contact. Very cool #hamradio

My #HEMA club started a new class last night... Collar and elbow wrestling ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collar-...) most of us don't have the official jackets so are making due with BJJ Gi's (because they are cheap and easy to find 😆) Was a lot of fun though I am sore this morning.

Guess it’s a bit of a #HamRadio rite of passage to make your own antennas. I have done two so far. A cloth one using faraday tape for 70cm and a “tape measure Yagi” for 2 meters. Surprisingly both work pretty well. I even drilled a hole on the tape measure one and threaded it to mount on a tripod.

Going to lots of HEMA tournaments teaches you a little bit about how laws work, because every tournament ruleset is written by 1-5 guys running a non-profit (read: broke) school out of the shittiest gym in town, and you get to watch their judges get hit by out-of-context problems on the regular.

We had a big #hema class last night which was great. Now that it's not 100 degrees in the gym I think people are more likely to attend (hence the fact we are looking for a new space with climate control). I also geared up and did some full on sparring for the firs time in what feels like forever.

Took and passed my ham radio technicians license exam today. The club doing the exam gave me a free handheld radio as a congratulations gift. Have to wait a few days to get my callsign from the govt. before I can talk on it though. Now to start studying for my general.

Question for #HEMA people. Do you or your school have any system of tracking what, especially newer, students know/have learned as part of a way to track their progress through their classes? Like at the most basic level almost: Can parry, can do cuts/guards, knows what footwork is ect?

Me and one of my clubmates doing some light sparring with wooden swords using @theswashbakler.bsky.social 3D printed designs. They held up well! Being wood the lack of flex is a issue but we may try using ratan canes at some point to see if they might work better. #HEMA
