The Menai Bridge opened on 30 January 1826. It was the largest suspension bridge so far built; its engineer Thomas Telford considered it his greatest single engineering feat. The bridge is 416 metres long, measuring 176 metres between the two main pillars. Illustration by Henry Gastineau (1830-34).

Over 150 works of fiction were held in the students' library at St David's College in 1889. These included lots of Dickens, Wilkie Collins and of course Trollope's tales of Barchester life. More surprising in an all male college, were Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Jane Eyre.
