All of the companies that make the software I use are increasing their prices, to account for an "investment" in AI. I'm sat here imagining how my clients would feel if I added 30% to each invoice, because I "really got into gambling".

Went to a prayer service tonight at St. Mary of the Lake, where they have cardboard cutouts throughout the church representing parishioners afraid to come to Mass because of ICE.

I’ve seen the post about how everybody is twelve years old now and I’d like to amend the theory to nine. Nine years old.

One of my deeply held beliefs is that if we could condition people to accept how chance affects their lives, they’d be much better equipped to recognize how systemic things impact them.

make art! if it's the end of the world, you might as well make art! if it's not the end of the world, then the future will be better because people made art right now!

This is, in large part, pandemic revenge. As far as these oligarchs are concerned, all science does is tell them stuff they cannot do. They can't keep spewing carbon. They can't keep businesses open as usual when millions are dying. They have concluded that research is the enemy of profit.

What if we circulated a monthly booklet with interesting things to read and look at? Printed on paper? With art? No uploading. Folks could submit writing and images for inclusion. It could (theoretically) be delivered to your address for a small fee

We’re not free until we’re all free. And the corollary of that—and I need some people to REALLY fucking internalize this—is that if you gamble with someone else’s freedom, you’re risking your own.

He keeps calling Justin Trudeau “Governor”! The man is the Prime Minister of a sovereign nation! All of this is ridiculous and nobody should be afraid to say that.

Help me identify this WWII soldier for a story I'm writing. My deadline is Feb. 14. The portrait was made between 1943 & 1945 in Pittsburgh's Hill District. He has a rifle medal on his chest, Service Forces patch & a Corps of Engineers insignia on his hat. Please repost & help me ID him. 🗃️

similar vein: interrogating with “where did you get that idea? whom does it serve?”. Abigail Thorn introduced me to that pair of questions and it completely overhauled how I think critically about so many things

“Who does this protect” is a question I keep asking this year as I read the news and it’s been pretty helpful.

There's something deranging and actively bad for society when a prominent person takes a big L and then nothing happens. The equation feels backwards but: Giuliani skating on some $80m penalty is the butterfly flapping its wings, and the hurricane that results is some shithead running a red light.
