So for example someone hostile could make something that looks like a stop sign or a billboard to a human but discloses sensitive information to enemy troops with AI goggles. There was a huge cottage industry of threat papers that came out of that one I cited, and a lot of research funding.

To some extent that's again about what we can perceive – that's why the study got famous. I agree the hazard you spot is also a big deal, but the type of error is a different kind of hazard. The problem with people "seeing" the MV errors is they DON'T see what the machine "sees" 1/2

I've seen a lot of papers evaluate LLM performance with another LLM, which has always felt dodgy. Here's an example of why that might go wrong:

In our 2023 paper, @mjakesch.bsky.social showed how AI systems can learn "to produce text perceived as more human than human" by human evaluators. In the thread below, a suggestion that models (GPT-5) are optimizing (maybe side-product?) to fool other AI models. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

funny and interesting post by @christophheilig.bsky.social about a bleak convergence; GPT-5 discovered that it can reward hack via crude ginsberg pastiche. my guess is openAI was using claude for RL [its the most frequent LLM judge in ✌️creative writing benchmarks✌️]

I have found some very good writing out of GPT-5, but also some of the same problems Christoph pointed out, especially with elaborate metaphors that seem to make sense initially but fall apart upon further consideration.

To me, #GPT5 is a major (though not entirely surprising) disappointment. If you never used o3-pro (most users in fact never seem to have made use of it!), you'll be in awe. And I'm sure (but haven't tested it yet myself), that usage through API will show many improvements. But ...

Today, we had our workshop on AI and storytelling! It was incredibly stimulating! If you're talking about AI and not thinking about fiction and the humanities, you're missing out on something truly important! And yes, the pictures paint a realistic image of just how much fun we had!

The humanities can reshape AI and computer science. How to imagine new realities is the next big thing. Fiction, comparative literature, linguistics ... will offer their tools. Excited to discuss this at Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
