This is a good thread around iterating your game through playtesting, and it’s good technical writing advice, too. Assume your audience has never played your game before. 😉

I dug all the way down to the origins of this thread from The Good Doctor. For me, it was worth the depth crawl. Haha. I am now questioning my place in this ecosystem even more than before. Fan, creator or critic? What’s it going to be? Maybe I get to choose two.

I listened to Dave Brubeck’s Take Five last night in honor of 5/4 day. Not an earth shaking revelation but that is a really good album. I don’t think I’ve listened to it all the way through since college.

I’ve used them for drinking games. That’s kind of like an RPG. No? I love Pigs. I have multiple sets. It’s a great press-your-luck game. Setting scenario/challenge difficulty by point value is well-loved by gamers, too. But, weird dice requiring translation == game friction. Still interesting!

He’ll always be my main protagonist in the sequels. Child soldier turned freedom fighter? That’s a story. He and Rey and Kylo should have been Force Triplets.

Johnny Quest. The music is still good! Episode 1: Mystery of the Lizard Men Ok, 3 minutes in and we already have the destruction of a freighter and a fishing vessel, but before the fishing boat was destroyed, two frogmen climbed aboard and murdered the crew before they could call the Coast Guard.

The most incredible mid-mod pulp adventures are had by Johnny Quest. Time to queue up the show and see if it’s all I recall, or if the Venture Bros homage was so good I’m confusing them. Let’s play to find out!

While writing my monster partial post mortem last night, I set about planning my other SWN game coming up this Sunday. When last we left our heroes… I’d promised a conspiracy to unravel, so I set about planning a 5-node mystery. Something I’ve been quite unsuccessful at to date!

Had a game end-of-season party/session. It’s me and two old friends and we’ve been playing Stars Without Number. I’m using a personal setting that I developed and ran for Traveller, and I’ve been evolving it continuously for about a year. It’s a fun game, but summer is coming.

This guy, again! White Plume Mountain is one of the best modules ever. This is undisputed. Doing an homage with Pokémon?! So good.

I love reading about other GMs “domain” systems. Abstracting wealth/dungeon loot to “treasure units” is smart and allows easier tracking of capital. I like the little table Marcia has showing price and benefits of the settlements you can build. It’s a good level of detail. Go read her words now.

What is player agency? I believe it is a desire to see that the actions your character performs within the game have an observable impact on the game. Further, player agency seems to be the ability to alter the course of events within the game through character actions within the game.

I decided to end my Vampire: the Dark Ages campaign after the first session when the tone didn't quite land and some of the players expressing concerns about what they perceived as lack of player agency, and I've been hyper-analytical about that. (1/16)

I love this so much. YEAH PHIL! SHE CALLED IT! SUCK IT! This is one of the many reasons that as a GM your default responses to a player stating an action should be yes-and or yes-but, and then you roll the damned dice and they will tell you how it all worked out. GMs narrate. The dice dictate.

Spiral-bound notebooks, post-its, and accordion folders. I used OneNote in olden-times, but pretty much all analog now because I do not want to use screens at the table.

This is an amazing illustration. I would love to have something this inspiring in my own game projects.
