Well, what I feared might happen happened, I was laid off on Thursday. I'll land on my feet as I always do, but this shit sucks and I have to deal with extra insurance hassles as I make sure my cancer is gone.

I finished chemo in November but my fingers keep tingling with pins and needles. And it's worse now, and now my feet are doing it and sometimes it's hard to go up or down stairs or even keep balance. I got a prescription which appears to be helping but here's hoping this disappears in 2026.

Sometimes I can get mad that the modern, upright suitcase with a telescoping handle and wheels was introduced within my lifetime

you can and should think about it especially in terms of local elections, not presidential ones. it is *extremely easy* for the cops to deny any group they do not like from being able to vote at all on everything from city council to mayor to governor, and cement their local power even further.

it's something to really chew on the mind, after 30 years of "tough on crime" and three strikes laws shit. how many people have been removed from the voting rolls - maybe have been off voting rolls for decades - because of giving basically carte blanche for police to target them?

follow up on this point: in all but two states - my own of maine and vermont - being a felon affects your voting rights in at least some way, sometimes even after serving your sentence. thus, a very quick way to remove a specific group's ability to even participate in democracy is to arrest them.
