Licensing laws in this country are ridiculous, restrictive and based in a mixture of postwar paternalism and victorian moralism. We should deregulate them as a reclamation of public space and collective joy, not "for growth", but deregulation is absolutely what needs to happen.

If you have to share the join link for your new party alongside a reassurance that "this is not a scam", something has probably gone wrong. This project really, really matters. All of the history and baggage aside, can you lot please not make this a total farce.

So what's the bet here? Lucy Powell absolutely smashes the deputy leadeship contest, Starmer limps on until the locals in May 2026, and then we get another roughly similar leader who pursues a marginally softer policy of racism and austerity? An inspiring prospect, isn't it.

Peter Mandelson is and always has been an utter liability. One of the most disliked New Labour era politicians, a strategist with a strategy stuck in 1994, mercenary, and at best a bad judge of character. Don't look at him, look at all the people who've called him a genius.

The Labour Deputy leadeship contest is such a classic display of superficial identity politics. "We need a woman, a northerner, someone working class." Are we going to address the structural or political issues? No. And what about a black working class woman who would? Absolutely not.

Watching right wing Labour politicians respond to Reform's immigration plan is like watching a man engaged in a fistfight, punching himself in the face in an attempt at self defence. It's not "unworkable" or a "gimmick". They are entirely serious. They are going to enact this barbarity.

The recurrence of sortition as a "one neat trick" to solve the left's organisational dilemmas (Extinction Rebellion proposed it, Momentum used it, now some want it for the new left party) is fascinating. Undemocratic, prone to random outomes, alien to mass politics. Yet somehow will not die.

There is a section of the left that is very hostile to an alliance with the Greens. It is often dishonest about why. Really, they don't like the Greens because the Greens are pro-Ukraine and historically anti-Brexit. Those Green stances chime with the majority view on the left. [1/3]

91% of nurses balloted by the RCN have rejected a 3.6% pay rise. Turnout was not bad at 56%. This is a very big deal. Doctors aren't on their own - we could be heading for another winter of discontent in the NHS. The industrial revolt against Labour austerity is rolling.

Today is the LAST DAY to join the Greens to vote in the leadership election. This election is pivotal. A leftward-moving Green Party, led by @zackpolanski.bsky.social, will be a crucial part of a winning left electoral bloc. If he loses, the only winners will be Reform and the Labour Right.

The people running Labour have entertained a fantasy that, like in the 1990s, they could crush the left. The problem with fantasies is that they tend to dissolve on contact with reality. All they've done is externalise the left. So Labour's century-long monopoly on left of centre politics is over.

There's a lot of pressure on the Greens to form an electoral alliance with a new left party. And I strongly support one. That cause is not made easier by the seeming inability of leading lights of the new left party to even acknowledge the Greens' existence.
