Wealthy nations curb labor migration as demand surges

Marking #InternationalMigrantsDay, ECRE member @rsaegean.org shares a harrowing story of an Afghan mother who died in a shipwreck, leaving five children behind her.

Basic facts on #InternationalMigrantsDay: 👉 Migration is simply the movement of people from one place to another. Anyone who moves, whether across borders or within a country, is a migrant. That means a person who moved from Italy to Brussels to work in the EU bubble is a migrant too.

This is what happens when media and politicians twist the language on migration: a misinformed public and rights denied to those seeking safety and dignity.

After enduring a violent attack by the EU-funded Libyan Coast Guard, the Ocean Viking search and rescue vessel is once again setting sail to save lives at sea. Welcome! This is a clear message to all governments & officials who promote, enforce, or fund policies that endanger people on the move.

Finally, a member state has recognised the positive impact of migration on Europe's economy and society.

Still, member states proudly tout the decline in irregular crossings this year, ignoring the countless people trapped in transit countries abandoned by European border policies to die or to endure unbearable suffering.

Under the EU-Tunisia Memorandum of Understanding, in 2023, the EU gave the Tunisian authorities 105 million euros to spend on the area of migration. European taxpayers don't want their money to be spent on human rights violations.

Organisations that save lives are being punished, while Libyan authorities, responsible for horrific abuses against people on the move, continue to receive support from the EU with impunity. What an unfortunate situation.
