On average from 2020 to 2024, nearly 41% of children in Ward 8, which is majority Black, lived below the poverty line, compared to 3.8% of children in Ward 3, which is majority white. It is clear that any discussion of child poverty in DC must center the needs of Black children and their families.

DC child poverty spiked by 11% in 2024, a number that will increase with continued cuts to DC and Federal budgets. The CTC is one of the best tools we have to help alleviate it. We're grateful to @cmzparker5.bsky.social and all his colleagues who are pushing for this important legislation.

Long-delayed unemployment numbers for DC are out and the 6.2% unemployment rate is nearly a full percentage point higher than in December 2024 - showing clearly the toll that Trump's slashing of the federal workforce is having on DC.
