An 1864 article tells of 'One old lady' who has read 'Udolpho' every Christmas for the last 50 years, but 'never opens the pages of the tale until she has fenced off diabolic agencies by saying her prayers.' Radcliffe has long had the dual ability to entrance and terrify readers!
