Did someone say Butterfriday? No, they didn't, but here are two views of owl butterflies from Costa Rica. Normally when they perch, these large butterflies insist on keeping their wings closed to utilize their camouflage and mimicry, but the one in photo 2 was being lazy, apparently.

Bad photo from a distance in low light but my fox buddy enjoyed their dinner tonight eating some then taking the rest walking past me carrying it off for latter. Foxes love that ability to take food with them if given the chance so I try to give them solid food when possible.

I haven’t seen a Red-breasted Nuthatch where I live for three years, then this morning they were all over the place! Nature is confusing but amazing and sometimes cute. 🪶

We tend not to think about lizards as exemplars of sexual dimorphism, but there are multiple examples from different clades of females having more vertebrae than males. It’s usually 1 or 2 more vertebrae in the torso. Probably so there’s more room for babies!🦎🧪 📷Podarcis bocagei by nachoperez
