Modern life both amused and saddened him. He sat in airport lounges watching people scream at delayed flights, staring at their phones with dead eyes while their lives ticked away.

"The fates decree, I only collect." He taped Was-sceptre gently once, revealing his self to her. "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." He nodded at her.

Joe spoke little, but when he did, his voice carried the low rumble of desert. He never raised it. People found themselves listening anyway. In a crowded café, when a man began shouting at his wife, Joe simply looked at him. The man’s anger collapsed into shame within seconds. No words were needed.

He had chosen the form carefully, tall, broad-shouldered, dark-skinned, with a quiet intensity that made people pause mid-sentence. The kind of man who looked his most commanding, deep, resonant voice, precise movements, and eyes that held the weight of every grave ever dug. +
