My mother was a nine year old refugee when she came to this country. She and her sister spoke no English. There were no ESL classes then. But good teachers in the small town of Barrhead where they lived taught them, and taught them well. They all became voracious readers with beautiful diction.

Today my sister and I had to decide that my dad, who has Alzheimer’s disease, would receive comfort care in long term care instead of being transported to Edmonton to determine the source of his bleeding. 2025 has been quite the year.

This was the second Christmas without Mom. I thought the second one would be easier, but it wasn’t. My dad has Alzheimer’s disease. As he declines, it is like he is trapped in a malfunctioning time machine.

Teachers in Alberta bargain provincially for salary increases and improving conditions in all classroom. We then bargain locally for other parts of our collective agreements. Bill 2 prevents us from bargaining locally also.

This summer I finally had a garage built. Now that it snowed, I am overjoyed that I will not have to clear my vehicle!

Below is a snapshot of one class in a typical day. As I wrote this description, I was concerned that it would not seem unmanageable enough.

Our family had Thanksgiving last night. It was the second Thanksgiving since my mom died. I came home and cried. Grief does not have a set timeline.

I attended the rally in Edmonton today. Moving through the massive crowd was relatively easy. You could tell that this crowd has spent a lot of time exiting in an orderly manner when they practice fire drills!

Update on the CFL Rabbit: I saw him inside the furniture store I was at this morning. It is unclear if he was there working, or if he was looking for a hutch for his hutch. He hopped away before I could get his autograph. I was so stunned to see him, I bought a couch. #TrueStory

What a kick!

Now that I have had few days off, I have to help clean out my parents’ house. Mom died on July 19. Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in February. Going through their home is another emotional journey.

To recognize my mom’s birthday yesterday, my sister and I went to see The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. My mom would have loved it. I wish she could have been there.

My mom died on July 19. Her birthday is Thursday. People have told me that knowing she would die from cancer must have made it easier to accept her death. It did not make it easier. Nothing could have prepared me for the grief I would experience after she was gone.

I have a moderate sprain of my right calf. Apparently descending a clear, non-icy back step is now a risky maneuver for me. 🤦‍♀️

We have limited home care & respite services in our area. My sister & I split the day, and alternate nights with my mom. She can’t get out of bed without assistance, so we have a monitor set up. Caregiving for a parent with cancer is challenging.

Tasha is hoping to destroy her Cone of Shame, if the vet says it can be removed today!

My mom was discharged from hospital yesterday after coming in Thursday night. This morning the ambulance had to bring her back in because she is experiencing severe pain. This is not a Hallmark movie.

We did not think my mom would still be here this Thanksgiving weekend. I am thankful that we still have some time left to spend together.
