Just now, Microsoft & other US tech companies successfully lobbied the EU to keep the public in the dark about the data centres' environmental footprint. Yet it is precisely the #AI industry which is set to consume vast amounts of energy & water and must be held accountable.

AI data work is booming. But according to @somoamsterdam.bsky.social so are its precarious conditions. Workers that label, clean, and train #AI (often in the global south) face low pay, unsafe conditions & weak protections. We need a counterweight to this global race to the bottom on labour rights.

AI has an energy problem ⚡️ Data centres needed to train AI consume as much electricity as more than 200k American homes. And data centre emissions could more than *double* by 2030 - making it one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouses gasses in the world.

Labour intensification is here. Far from easing workloads - deciphering AI slop, and accumulating tasks due to the perceived 'efficiencies' of AI, is just leading to more work. This results in cognitive overload, burnout, poorer decision-making, and declining work quality.

Opposition to #AI is rising in states like #Missouri that are overrun by large data centres. Residents are concerned about air and water quality, jobs, scams and surveillance. Now, they're protesting construction and even proposing a permanent data centre ban (now a year-long ban).

Amazon's #Superbowl commercial advertised the ability for AI to scan #Ring feeds to 'find lost dogs'. But this kind of technology can easily be weaponised in the age of ubiquitous surveillance. Already, Amazon is fueling mass deportations through Amazon Web Services’ contracts with ICE and DHS.

"A small number of corporate executives are building technologies that will shape the economy for decades. No one elected these people." @anthropic.com is one of the few places pushing for a precautionary approach to AI regulation, and a cohesive social & economic plan for working people.

In #Minneapolis, ICE has deployed tech like biometric trackers, cell location databases & drones. They are doing so not only to identify and surveil undocumented immigrants but also protestors. “The conglomeration of all these technologies together is giving the government unprecedented abilities.”

ELITE, the tool created by Palantir, allows ICE to find the closest person to arrest and disappear. "It makes a mockery of the idea that ICE is trying to make our country safer. Rather, agents are reportedly picking people to deport from our country the same way you'd choose a nearby coffee shop.”

TikTok is completely cooked. Since the takeover, a group of mainly American investors approved by Trump took control of #TikTokUS. And recently, the app reportedly suppressed videos about Epstein, criticising ICE & mentioning the shooting of Alex Pretti.

This report estimates that up to 435 million people work as data workers globally. That’s a huge amount of people working so-called ‘gig jobs’ that offer little to no protection, with uncertain income streams and no clear career pathways.
