Recently learned that Tom Robbins passed away earlier this year at age 92. Not sure how this news escaped me—it should have been a National Day of Mourning if the USA had any standards. He only produced 8 novels, but each one is a banger and an absolute delight to read. RIP

“To fight in a war,” [Huckleberry Finn] said. “Can you imagine?” “Would that mean facing death every day and doing what other people tell you to do?” I asked. “I reckon.” “Yes, Huck, I can imagine.” Funny, horrifying, razor sharp, and winner of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

The Kesh culture is explored through short stories, anthropology records, myths, plays, novel excerpts, song lyrics, and poetry. This non-narrative style may turn off some readers, but Always Coming Home by Ursula K. Le Guin is a master class in worldbuilding! Heyiya Heyiya

What I'm lacking most from the DOPE effect is oxytocin. Would love to share progress updates with other writers. Here's one: I have an opening scene in mind for the first act of a new novel. Next step: writing that opening scene and outlining an actual story arc. What's your progress update?

Sharing another alternative to Goodreads: The StoryGraph. One feature I like about this platform is it allows you to import your Goodreads data so you don't have to start from scratch. Plus it's owned by a black woman, not a white male billionaire. Add me!

Highlighting a nonfiction book I read recently. Psychedelic rites of passage are a part of our history. I believe the world is a poorer place due to the loss of these rites--there would be no Donald Trump in a world where dissolution of the ego was a natural part of our life experience.

Whether reading for pleasure or professionally, I'm still a hard NO on any AI-generated content. However, HC’s AI licensing is a step in the right direction to protecting copyrighted work and clearly separating AI content from traditional publishing.
