Need vs "merit?" Things I don't get: why someone who already has been given a postdoc is given a paid fellow for a project on top? I feel more qualified and could have really used the experience and pay of a fellow. Instead, I attend monthly meetings run by the fellows so they can say they lead.

Science academia keeps funding a ton of PhDs & post-docs (all temp labor) while its market of stable post-PhD jobs continues a long & steady collapse. Proposal reviewers still go “Oh this proposal’s really great because it funds a ton of students!” And no one reflects on that enormous imbalance.

Why is it so hard for those with privilege to admit things like the prestigious 4 yr lib arts college they went to, or the high ranking R1 institutes, their famous advisors, or that their parents had the college experience to pass on and then self-admit why mentors come running to their aid?

Something desperately needed in training others for working anywhere is ability to say "I don't know how to do that" and to self inform through whatever means - shadowing, reading, practicing. Stop accepting or rewarding the smile, nod, and pretend. Reward self awareness and self motivated learning.

Something I never see in academic job postings: "seeking a maverick, someone with new ideas articulated to solve the world's problems." Instead, it's more or less, someone who fits well w/current crew and uni's strategic goals.

There are 4 parts to the privilege question: 1) is each evaluated by the same standards (fairness)? 2) are the standards sufficient to detect potential talent? 3) how much are the standards for talent limited by the creators of the standards? 4) are the standards known by all?

It would be nice to be able to write longer threads or + thread blocks. I also liked seeing how many read my posts, even if they didn't indicate so.

I don't mind volunteering my time if I value the activities, purposes, and goals. But I'm always perplexed how I can be considered qualified to do some things I'm permitted to volunteer for, but not enough to be interviewed or chosen for postdocs, fellows or academic positions.

My career in higher ed stalled b/c of this, and I was not the only one in my dept. Easy pickings to weed out those of us who did not come from privileged backgrounds and deny us advancement b/c we "were not engaged in the profession." 😠🤷

It's not okay to offer funding where the recipient uses their own money first and is reimbursed later. This barrier puts serious pressure on those in less privileged positions. Many struggle (silently) or lose out completely. Reduce inequity by offering resources up front.

Not to mention what will happen bc of the fact that 60% of US citizens is living from paycheck to paycheck. It becomes harder/more expensive to enter higher education and talent will make a choice not to pursue an education. This will stifle innovation.
