It should not be up to victims of abuse to have to carry all the burden of fighting their abusers, and to carry the risks associated with fighting back. We need to do better in supporting victims and having their back.

A young fox is sitting on your porch, begging for candy. What will you do?

I'm sorry if you think that me standing up to bullies tarnishes a lifetime of disability and accessibility advocacy. I respectfully disagree. I know I would be easier to follow and support if I was always jovial and agreeable, but I'd find it mighty hard to sleep at night if I didn't say something.

It doesn't work like that. A lot of the hurdles the disabled community has conquered have indeed been battles against people who sincerely don't consider us a big enough or valid enough group to matter. We didn't get the ADA by smiling and nodding as people told us this world wasn't meant for us.

The reason I speak up so often about a small but vocal subset of the community antagonizing me is because I don't subscribe to "respectability politics", the idea that if I was only meek and agreeable enough, the people who don't care about my rights or well-being would suddenly start to do so.

I share pointers and advice, I answer questions from curious folks, I consult with my own lived experiences, and when it's possible, I volunteer personally to help fix what I can myself. I don't use this platform as a billboard to advertise those things because I just do em for the sake of doin em.
