But I believe we all should start thinking about where and how Bologna failed and how we can bring back some of the good stuff, without provoking the same kind of problems we had back then. 25 years of Bologna baloney: if you’re happy and you know it… clap your hands. 11/11

And, last but not least, why are we all still playing along (and I am including myself here)? Just to be sure: I don’t simply want to go back to 1998, when university life was so much better. Been there, done that, and I know it had its problems and drawbacks. 10/11

What about other countries in Europe? Do you celebrate the occasion? Apparently, in Germany, no one in charge saw the need to push this topic with the media or the public. Why? 9/11

Why don’t the mainstream media celebrate this glorious anniversary – after all, it was a major reform of our most valuable training and research system? It was not even mentioned, except for that one radio station no one listens to. 8/11

Are we better off than we were 25 years ago? And what was actually broken in our old system? Is a free range university degree from, say, 1985, less valuable than a quality managed one from 2015? 7/11

And, honestly, the idea itself was pretty cool. But now, looking back, I have a few questions. Why haven’t we seen any evaluation of this all? They sure evaluate and torture us with accreditation procedures all the time. Quality management, you know. 6/11

Fewer students than ever spend their time abroad. What’s not to like? The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and we should perhaps give the 29 ministers the benefit of doubt that their decision was not based on economical or political grounds, but was motivated by a love for learning. 5/11

Only few companies want to hire 22 year old greenhorns with a Bachelor’s degree. The credit point system across Europe resembles the Kabala of numbers – which in turn means that spending a semester abroad is more tricky and risky than ever. 4/11

Now, 25 years later, where do we stand? 49 countries are participating. Now many students are high strung and shitty pants about their grades and credit points for most of their student lives instead of only once. Looking at anything outside of the box? Unthinkable. 3/11

No more scary final exams, a first qualifying degree after only three years of training, a transparent and universal credit point system, quality management, plus easy student and faculty exchanges all over Europe. What’s not to like? A dream come true. 2/11
