When I work with junior faculty writing books ā especially Black women ā one of their primary concerns is that the book they're writing will be banned. Even if its not an outright ban, they're worried the books won't be assigned in classes for the very reasons being discussed here today.

When Campus Reform and Turning point came after professors and created the professor watchlist, administrators didn't pay attention..Now they are being fired and attacked. Maybe institutions should have done more to protect academic freedom....

If *your department head and your dean* can be removed for supporting your colleague in teaching in their area of expertise, then you have no academic freedom. In a functional sense, you don't work at a university at all.

I spend most of my day helping academics writie their first book, which means I've seen a lot of different approaches and also developed some principles to make the process as pain-free as possible :). I share what I've found to be most useful in this podcast episode :

As a former Texas State Rep, let me be clear: LOCKING Rep. Nicole Collier inside the chamber is beyond outrageous. Forcing elected officials to sign āpermission slipsā & take police escorts to leave? Thatās not procedure. Thatās some old Jim Crow playbook.

All writing you do for your book (or whatever project you're working on) is real writing. Outlines, rough drafts, random bullet points, notes on cocktail napkins, ideas in your notes app. It's all real. There's no fake writing.

Everyone will need feedback on their writing at some point, but it can be hard to figure out what to ask for. Here are three categories to consider to organize your thoughts around what feedback would be most helpful:

I talk to a lot of academics who are hesitant to commit to an argument for their book and want to be sure before they start writing. The only way you'll gain certainty is by writing those arguments down and assessing them.

You don't have to write your book in order. Stop laboring over that introduction you'll have to revise once the rest of the book is complete.

Guess what? You're not supposed to know how to write a book already just because you wrote a dissertation. They're very different.
