I'll be contrary and argue they're not rail shooters, but 3D shmups. If you take Star Fox and make it 2D, it'd be a traditional vertical shooter. Basically, if you can move around and are not stuck on a "rail" like in most lightgun games, it's a shmup. That's my two cents.
