3/4 The surprise? Present discharge was modest, but sediment cores showed past episodic flow events, brief but powerful surges that transport sediment and carve deep channels under the ice shelf. These events likely dominate channel melt and reshape the ice-ocean interface. 🌊

2/4 Using a hot-water drill, the team accessed a channel at the grounding zone of West Antarctica’s Kamb Ice Stream. For the first time, they directly observed #subglacial #water entering an ocean cavity, revealing a turbid plume and signs of major ice melt and sediment movement.
