I’ve been looking for a clean SBOOI (5cm external viewfinder) for my IIIf, and this beautiful one just arrived from @camera-traders.com. Looking through it, the framelines appear to float in space, and with 1:1 magnification you can keep both eyes open while shooting. It’s going to be a joy to use.

Since the CBC’s coverage of the women’s gold-medal game between Canada/U.S. is heavily featuring Kool and the Gang’s “Ladies’ Night,” I thought I’d mention that the bass Robert “Kool” Bell played on that track was hand-made by my uncle, Gary Cooper, under his “Oasis” trademark. Ahem: analog never left.

We received a big dump of snow last night, so this morning I grabbed my trusty Leica IIIf, loaded it up with @ilfordphoto.com HP5+, and headed out the door. It was softly snowing, so I walked to campus, taking the long way. Although it was -18°C (0°F) out, this old beauty didn’t miss a beat.

It’s been a long time coming, as I’ve been extremely busy (as in 60-70+ hrs/wk busy) putting together lecture materials for a new course I’m teaching. But I’m finally - finally! - developing some film in the basement darkroom I set up over the summer.

These were the halcyon days for cycling: before cell/smartphones and their distractions; before elevated levels of driver rage and aggression. I still miss downtube shifters. We used to pull Malt-nut Powerbars from their foil wrappers and wrap ‘em around the top tube (for more convenient eating).

5 years ago today a massive debris flow raced down the Ronti Gad, Rishiganga, & Dhauliganga valleys in the Chamoli region of Uttarakhand, India, destroying two hydropower plants, and killing around 200 people. It was a horrific tragedy and my thoughts today are with the families of those killed 🧪⚒️

I’ve just finished a lab exercise with my environmental instrumentation class, in which we built an automated weather station on the top of a 15-story building here on campus. About half-way through, I noticed that we had company: a merlin! It seemed completely unfazed by our presence.

My rear fender was laughably undersized for my fatbike’s 4.5” wide tire, and the warm spell we’re experiencing here in Edmonton is melting a lot of snow and ice. My low-budget solution worked a treat this morning - I arrived at work with a dry backside.
