A US government intent on ruling by terror and pursuing a broad policy of state violence poses a daunting new reality for a country lulled by the absence of autocracy throughout most of its history. Daunting—but not unconquerable if we summon our inner Ukrainian and commit together to the struggle.

The hero of Ukraine has a Trumpian streak that threatens to do in both him and the country.

Many of the West’s older democracies are under siege from authoritarianism. The rallies in Kyiv and other cities showed that Ukrainians remain much more attuned and allergic to that potential threat. One nation in particular could learn much from them. Looking at you, America.
