Victoria is getting a stark warning about the health and economic costs of climate change. More than $57 billion worth of infrastructure, including roads, rail, hospitals and energy assets, is at risk of damage or destruction from extreme heat, bushfires and floods by 2030.

While there are some welcome measures supporting renewable energy and environmental protection, overall the Federal Budget does not reflect the urgency and gravity of the threat to Australians’ health and wellbeing posed by the interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss & pollution.

New Australian research has found a clear link between air pollution exposure and increased hospitalisations for heart and lung issues. There is no safe level of air pollution. To protect health and save lives, we urgently need stronger emissions standards & a rapid transition to clean transport.

Heatwaves are already Australia’s 'silent killer' & without urgent climate action, by 2100 they could claim more than 1,500 lives every year. New Monash University research shows that rural, remote & disadvantaged communities would be hardest hit. To protect health, we must phase out fossil fuels.

Heavy vehicle pollution costs us $6.2bn a year in health effects. The study found that children attending childcare near major roads are exposed to pollution levels equiv. to 8 cigarettes a day. No parent should have to worry that the air their child breathes at childcare could harm their health.
