Here's someone else who thought Casino and Boogie Nights were similar. Apparently Goodfellas is the key reference. Maybe this genre is not for me, maybe I just need to watch Goodfellas?

Trying to watch a few more classic-type films, I watched Casino. Uniformly unpleasant people just doing things for no real reason, for three hours, Robert de Niro doing the same face for all of it. Within my limited frame of reference, it's a bit like Boogie Nights. Cool opening titles.
