Every now and then I find an album I can listen to endlessly on repeat, and right now it’s Paul-Marie Barbier’s Solo on the Side.

Can you believe that back in the day the recommended solution was not just to shut it down and turn it back on again, but to actually drop the entire thing six inches onto a hard surface in the hope that loose senators would reseat themselves?

Wow,
@observablehq.com
's new Notebooks 2.0 seems really, really good. An offline editor app, a pleasantly-human-readable notebook format, and had no trouble integrating it into my website here:

I'm in the phase of my programming career where I've figured out how to write a simple-enough recursive descent parser, and suddenly everything looks like a parsing problem.

Turn on the sound — this is how nearly every night sounds for me and my family. Imagine getting used to that, living, working, raising kids. A lesson the world didn’t learn from WW2: when you tolerate and appease evil, it grows stronger, and you won’t notice until it reaches your home.

Expanded it to work across an array of satellite tiles and added soft shadows. Softening shadows around the azimuth is easy because you just average samples (here, 16), and along the altitude is even easier because the horizon algorithm gives enough information to simply do a smooth fade.

🎵 2 weeks ago, me and my band Obiymy Doschu have released “Vidrada”, our new album, passionately crafted in Kyiv for 7 years. I've never been more invested in a project, and will be proud of it for the rest of my life. All my love, dreams, hopes and worries in one record. ⬇️

Made a quick page for sharing/browsing Mapbox maps. Has a screenshot button, a style selector, a share link, and can add to homescreen, if that's your thing. E.g. an excellent boat wake 🚢:

Happened to stay up late and catch Sam Watson (spoiler alert) setting two speed climbing world records last night! Made a quick plot of the world record progression, and if we can simply extrapolate this, then it looks reasonable to expect more. So fast.

A photo from a recent trip to Wadi Rum, Jordan. Still in absolute awe of the place. Absolutely excellent climbing, plenty of interesting fauna, and the people were extremely friendly (and confused about what's going on in the US). (full disclosure: photo has been slightly edited.)

The sun rising over Thor Peak, Auyuittuq National Park, Canada. It's using line sweep horizon tracking to compute ambient occlusion and physically accurate shadows together with relief shading, all packed into an RGBA texture. Pretty happy with the scanline algorithm, but the shading needs work.

I've put a lot of work into the template for my running blog site. Not looking for congratulations, just genuinely curious: if I took the time to clean up the rough edges and turn it into a proper authoring tool, is that a thing literally anyone would use/want?

New Trains and Trails! From Lagunitas, toward Point Reyes National Seashore, then back down the ridge to Stinson Beach. And a Dipsea. A pretty intense day by the end, but I'm going to call this the best route I've run in the Bay Area. Oh my gosh it was lovely. 🌲🥰🌲

Every couple years I check in, hoping someone finally put together a BLAS/LAPACK solution for the web, but—and correct me if I'm wrong—2025 is here, and I'm still not aware of one. Since I don't have a job, maybe it's finally time to make it happen.

Yay a potential flow panel solver. Variables are source/sink strength distributed along each segment and uniform circulation along the curve. It solves for the values that make flow 1) not pass through the rigid surface, and 2) leave the trailing edge smoothly. 🛫

Wanted to catch sunrise on Half Dome. Arrived at about the right time but then sat/slept in car for two hours with (literally) cold feet trying to psych myself up and not bail completely. Went through with it; no sunrise. Bad run, but a lovely day.

One more music bit I want to share: a live video from a recent acoustic performance in Kyiv, with a song about not giving up — feels especially relevant that's it out today, after yet another mass missile strike on Ukrainian civilians.

Not quite certain what I'm doing with my time off just yet. Mostly just reading other people's code, documentation and tutorials. Feels like it must somehow equate to time well spent, even if I'm not sure quite how just yet.
