Ignoring the ego only increases the power of its control, as the defensive impulse against the pain of recognition is denial. Deliberate prioritization of “we” simultaneously foregrounds and subordinates that same power to the collective ties that a shared threat to “us” requires for survival.

No one can afford to lose sight of the fact that it’s *not* “I protect us, but “WE protect us” — for a reason. Language’s immense subconscious power is revealed by when we actively render it visible. Language choices create, frame, reinforce, and can change our collective reality.

In today’s edition of “What Can I Do?”: Use “we” instead of “I” when addressing the issues of dangers, challenges, strategies, etc. It may sound insignificant, but it’s an immensely powerful action. “We” forces us to focus on the necessity of collective protection against shared threats.

Last thing I forgot, I promise! Defensively shutting down over a call-out replicates the shitty power dynamics you think you’re fighting. Black folks tiptoe around white feelings; women bend over backwards to not upset men. REPEAT and REMEMBER Ego is the antithesis and enemy of solidarity.

Righteous anger against “the enemy” and the harm they cause feels so good in the moment, but we can’t allow it to drive our actions. Otherwise, we become the mirror of what we convinced ourselves we wholeheartedly oppose. I get the impulse as much as you do, and need the reminder as much, too.

When it comes to millionaires and billionaires, “many of these people are simply entitled, lazy, barely literate, and, like, some of them are just frankly bad people.” But you know what? They are humans, like me, and I do not wish starvation on them. I want us all to act justly — and that’s it.
