As a writer, I want to create moments in time that sit with the audience just so. My job is to spend a lot of time thinking about you, how you might react, how I can create things that hit you ~just so~ that leave you going "wow." LLMs don't even know you exist, even when you're talking to them.

"they will be, one day" no, they won't, any more than tires can help you fly. They're not built for that. They're a fundamentally different technology. An LLM does not exist to model conscious thought, it exists to take advantage of your willingness to see faces in things that aren't there.

Like, it would be amazing to visit a Westworld-style place and make choices--as a player--like "can we go there" or "what happens if we do that" and have the entire game ~adjust~ to that. Like "let's farm for gold! wow! we found gold!" But an LLM is literally not capable of doing such a thing.

Imagine that you find the gold and then the evil bandits find out about the gold and they come to take your gold mine from you, and all of this is happening because the artificial intelligence of these characters is such that they can make these decisions. An LLM is not capable of doing that, tho

There is no way for a team of humans to make a game that considers every variable, every line, because at some point, you're going to end up with a thing that's just Actually A Person Minus The Knowledge They're A Robot in Westworld. an LLM, of course, is not capable of doing this

there simply is not enough time in the world for a team of people to make a game where the two thousand or so NPCs you'd have in a game as big as Where Winds Meet all have completely human personalities, and can react to ~every~ player decision as a real person would but an LLM can't get you there

a machine designed to output words similar to the words that were placed within it is not designed to reason or think or react or understand context; many LLMs have a VERY difficult time retaining even basic information. so an LLM can never, by its very nature, achieve the goal of being an NPC

to get at what the LLM crowd wants to do and have it be useful, you need something with beyond human-level intelligence, that understands the game very well, with a nature that is designed to lead the player into the most interesting gameplay experience and moment. LLMs cannot do this.

an LLM cannot understand ~how~ to make Westworld fun for you, it cannot understand what, specifically, is the right moment to introduce a new character or say something that gets your attention. It cannot 'know' you in any meaningful way because LLMs are not capable of thought.
