Open data seem to catch up to speed (at least a bit) in Greece. You can access Athens Public Transportation Ridership data with an API from data.gov.gr. I will soon make something out of this, let’s see how it works out… You can also find some other datasets there, like car ridership in Athens.

GR Peloponnes: Ab Sommer 2026 verkehrt Levante Trains mit MAN-1-Zügen (?) auf der Strecke Katakolo - Pyrgos - Olympia. Hellenic Train konzentriert sich mehr auf die Hauptstrecke Athen - Thessaloniki. Das kann auch bedeuten, dass die S-Bahn Patras 3 mehr Züge erhält (6+3 Stadler GTW 2/6 Meter).

The GR Gov and Railways Organization will soon complete the installation of two Starlink antennas on each train, after an investment from a ship owners club. These antennas will be part of the HEPOS geopositioning system, available openly at railway.gov.gr This is not a good idea at all.

On Wednesday, 31.12.2025 @ 13:00, a special train will run from Kalamata‘s Depot to the Main Station, do a quick back and forth and return to the Depot, as a New Year‘s celebration. The rolling stock will be one or two MAN 1 DMU(s) and there may also be an ALCo Diesel Locomotive (not confirmed).

Hellenic Train (Member of the FSI Group, Passenger and Freight trains in GR) just announced an order of 23 Alstom Coradia Stream EMUs. Internal sources claim 15 suburban + 8 IC sets, scheduled to arrive from 2027.

Last night there were two O405N buses at the terminus of trolley lines 5 & 14 in Galatsi, Athens. Both displaying route number 054 and with passengers onboard, but did not start any journey while I was nearby. The important bit here is that neither 054, nor any other regular bus serve this stop.

Does anyone want to see some O405N buses? They recently replaced many YUTONG E12 e-Buses in Athens, I still don’t know the exact reason. Thank god for batteries 🪫

Back in Greece now, travelling from Patras to Thessaloniki via Athens. The track condition is very bad compared to other countries like Italy or (especially) Austria. So much movement, so much noise. Also we started with a 9 minute delay due to other trains in front of us. The train is almost full 🥲

The EC 31 Zürich HB - Bologna C.le was so on time that we arrived 8‘-15‘ ahead of schedule in Italian stations. Also the AV 9805 arrived at Milano Rogoredo at 10:31 instead of 10:43. What is happening with delays in northern Italy and the planners are so cautious? 😅

Arriving at Basel Bad Bf on the ICE 77 the conductor announced the station and the connections and then asks all passengers with destinations in Switzerland and Italy to stay onboard till the next station, Basel SBB. I‘m thinking of all the less train-savvy people who lost connections this way 🥲

More good news from the Peloponnese meter gauge! A new operator "Levante Trains" will run trains on the Katakolo (Port) - Pirgos - Ancient Olympia line beginning first half of 2026. One round trip per day, leaving about 4 hours in Olympia. Cruise passengers will be the target of these trains.

At some point it might be a good idea to fix the lights of the NightJet 2 sets and make them *not* dim from 20% -> 100% -> 0% and all over again the entire ride. Also when they’re at 0% the screens turn off. It’s such a good system and it works very smoothly, but it does the wrong things. Smoothly.

User-hostile design, placing too bright signs on platforms, blinding passengers trying to go home in an otherwise dimly lit station (poor maintenance). European take on this (and for this specific trainset): In Europe there are high-speed rail trainsets that are faster than anything when it comes to international travel, however the incompetence of governments and railway companies to build a functional network, leads to their abandonment.

Athens Central Station, progress on the tracks 1-6. It’s moving forward, not too fast, not too slow. The old building will remain, everything else will change. Tracks 7-10 are operational since 18.07.2018, the same day overhead electrification reached the capital.

So now that it‘s official, I’ll share some thoughts about this decision (that I dislike).

Last Saturday I was happy about the Patras‘ new Suburban Rail timetables. It was going well, even a slight change was made in order to accommodate shops‘ closing times etc. Today a car driver decided that the level crossing barriers, lights and bells are optional and took out a train (they survived)

With almost 400 km of lines, the Athens Trolleybus network is one of the largest worldwide. Now, after recent developments in the ministry of transport, it looks like most - if not all - of the network will be scrapped in favour of battery electric buses. Here is a relevant news article (in Greek)
