Aight got to alastar, my thoughts: God of war sons of Sparta is pretty mid tbh. Very repetitive encounters(usually only 1 or at most 3 enemies) that are all solved by iframes/parrying since you can literally roll through enemies lol

So far: Seems like sons of sparta is more about āmethodicalā combat, since you canāt really cancel into shield much. Like the fact there isnāt omni blocking. Wish I didnāt have to press triangle to go up or down ledges tho and climb ladders

I could show a clip of me doing nothing for 10 seconds and it could be the most high level possible play in that moment because of the circumstances. people who know the game would see the nothing clip and be in awe

Ik this is basic, but it really canāt be stressed enough how much you should actually play a game instead of just looking at clips of them, since many times clips of a game may look extremely simple but the thought that goes behind gets overlooked

you ask an FPS fan why they don't like a game and all they do is rant about not being able to jump or having a limited inventory in a game clearly not designed around jump buttons or unlimited inventories

Really love tho how the enemy DT in gmgow can be used for your advantage since it allows you to use enemies, like these arrow guys here, longer as ammo against bigger ones.

Yeah its been a while but iirc the dinos could be dodged as well,so I wonder how much of the forced damage on the bridge was a lack of practice. But more importantly I LOVE the idea of properly integrating terrain into combat this way where even the same enemy combo creates a radically diff challenve

An underrated aspect to FEAR's enemy barks is that it serves to make enemy behavior appear deliberate, which is important because a lot of players tend to assume that any element that doesn't call attention to itself yet pushes players out of their comfort zone is an unintentional oversight

Say what you will about the implementation but integrating random encounters into terrain in such a robust way is actually fucking awesome & forward thinking in a way that "remove annoyance" design isnt. The devs should make it a more integrated intentional mechanic

"microtransactions in games started by cabal of pedophile elites for the purpose of indoctrinating kids into an economy" Ok. Well, we all knew it was evil somehow but I really didn't expect Epstein to be responsible for why video games are bad now. That's just not what I would've thought.

LOL no they did not start there, both can be traced back to the 70s. It was Pablos Holman talking to Epstein making comments about games being flow-optimized, then Epstein forwarding that email to Bobby Kotick who ofc suggested drip feeding rewards-all in 2013 which was quite late to the party.

Whats really been sinking in for me wrt rng in action games is that a lot of the mental dynamics that make hard execution a poor tool for creating risk reward also apply to RNG.Playing action games isnt a rational process, assessing risk reward on the fly is hell so players will most likely stick to-

Feels like the winning action game formula for (the more hardcore) younger players is low amount of snowballing/interconnectedness between different challenges, really basic & intuitive controls/mechanics BUT insane speed to compensate for low difficulty elsewhere

youtu.be/7frML8CZLpY?...
Modern CAG devs and players think that this terrain stuff is bad & gets in the way of combat, so they turn everything into an arena or encourage YOU to do it by never using terrain

Another big sign of how peoples relationship to single player games has changed is the popularity of "Beating *game* but without etc etc" type videos The videos are a reflection of culture. The personal ruleset has become the default, because the games cease to be fun without it

People anthropomorphize video game enemies in a way that creates really fucked up discussions and critical eval. Where if enemies are good at pantomiming "aggressive gameplay" their design is treated as good even if it's completely unfit for the types of player mechanics the game they're in has

Reviewing rly simple games is a really nice litmus test cuz they force u to ditch the usual crutches of describing parts of the game without ever connecting it all together to get anything worthwhile out of it. U basically have to directly think about how everything connects & ur own play experience
