Wasn’t sure if it was deathless or not, because the death counter was 1. Wasn’t the first time I thought I had no deaths but it said 1. Looked up another deathless run and they had the same thing. I think it counts ascension as a death. Lol So yeah, it’s deathless.

What struck me as odd between 2D and 3D melee-oriented games is that while 2D games generally expected you to avoid damage through staying or jumping away, most 3D games decided that a block/dodge/parry/etc. was necessary. Try listing what 3D games do so and don't, and it'll look like this:

It's not just the walk speeds, the enemy AI is generally a lot more static & unreactive to both your positioning & states. Here's some old notes I took when doing research- basically they took the surface level stuff but didnt quite capture the nuances. Eg SOR2 enemies pause when ur doing a superjoy

I've found that the games that Rain World actually has the most in common with imo is classic traditional roguelikes like Brogue or Shiren (Cogmind especially considering that game's focus on creating an ecosystem).

I think it’s not only valid, but you should be encouraged to compare games of different genres together. Games that are in seemingly different genres can end up having really similar dynamics. Also I think people have gotten too reflexively dismissal of comparing games in different genres.

Yeah UTs in Ninja Gaiden suck, but you can jab infinite in Final Fight so I guess all games are broken at the end of the day! (These are totally equatable and I swear I didn’t come to this conclusion by dicking around in FF for 5 minutes and mostly spectating!)

Ninja Gaiden is so freakin hardcore that if you use a not hard to execute strat that you can apply to 90% of the game, its fans will get mad at you because it’s balanced worse than even a B-tier beatemup 😂😂😂

Finally got around to beating Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer. They actually managed to outdo the first Torneko. A game that requires you to be even craftier, and deal with even meaner, trickier enemies. Fantastic.

Kind of a bummer that the vast majority of modern action platformers seem to take from the console school of design (static, one note) rather than the arcade school (dense, chaotic, dynamic) in games like GnG or Ninja Spirit.

Gun Frontier has some of the meanest popcorn I’ve dealt with in a shootemup. Constantly flying into your face at great speeds plus a lot of little rng makes them like the primary threat of the game. Love it tbh.

Im glad Natsume evolved archaic lazily designed 1:1 controls by adding more meaningful limitations & commitment in their Shadow of the Ninja remake. Instantly responsive controls were more of a product of their time, they couldn't have many animations & didn't know about state machines until SF2

Glad he brought up the controls. Feels like a huge problem with modern controls, where they are so freeform that there’s basically nothing interesting about controlling them. Also gets to the point where you can’t test players without really tacky methods or just… not testing the player.

Rain World works really well as an exploration game (it will be when you first start and know nothing) but is also a terrific routing game even when you know where everything is. The dynamics of the game don’t disappear once you know the game. Has a lot of longevity.

Really hate this eyerolling implication that being okay with filler in games that is in no way engaging is some sort of enlightened stance because you can “enjoy other things besides action”. Lol Like no it’s not, it’s the opposite. It means you have low standards and are okay wasting time.

It’s extremely impressive that Violent Storm was able to give every character a move where they dart across most the screen super fast yet still maintain the twitchy, adjustment-heavy fundamental aspect of positioning in more slower beatemups.

The fact that Final Fight's back-jump speed increase was not only deliberately programmed in rather than being a byproduct of how the movement was coded, and the fact that it was added directly by Nishitani because it felt good during testing is fucking awesome

Everything is a WIP, sound effects are placeholders. Working on an arena game mode for a demo, trying to get enemy behaviors right between evasive/aggressive, gonna be adding more nuance to them soon. More playable characters are coming along nicely too.

Ok I think I finally understand exactly what they were cooking. It's a game where you smash cool action figures together and see them do badass shit, with the challenge/interactive layer being just extra engagement.
