For whatever reason it feels like arcade run n guns are unknown even among people who like console RnG's and like arcade games. Indie RnG devs abso-fucking-lutely have to hop on because the gap between arcade & console/PC RnG design philosophy is HUGE.Most follow in the footsteps of console shit

Undercover Cops has some of the better enemy design of the genre. The game’s biggest problem is that it doesn’t mix different types together enough until the last level. On the bright side, as is Irem tradition, the final level is 50% of the game.

My biggest takeaway from binging arcade run n guns so far is that shot range limits are extremely healthy for this style of games and it's sad that they mostly went away outside of specific weapons. There aren't many RnG games that benefit from your shots traveling through the whole screen

Why the hell did IREM put rng bubbles with Psikyo speeds and R-Type hitboxes into a kids' platformer (Play Kid Niki/Kaiketsu Yanchamaru, hell credit feed it cuz that's fun too. Game's a joy beginning to end IMO, wish I played it as a kid)

Playing more obscure arcade run n guns reminded me that Contra, despite its immense popularity & influence, is one of the less interesting games in the genre. And its console ports stripped a lot of the best aspects of the arcade originals, then 3 buried run n guns completely w the boss rush formula

Part of me feels like Dark Souls wouldn't have caught on if the first game had difficulty settings. It'd be "cheap", "pointless", etc. Arcade games had a relatively granular difficulty option via credit feeding and it played a big part in them written off as "button mashers"/"quarter munchers".

Feel like it’s a huge problem with modern arcade throwbacks, where they’re really solid in their foundations, but just not nearly hard enough. So many of these games are in a big need of some juiced up difficulty.

Yeah, the original Ghosts’n Goblins is very high up on my favorites list. Just embodies so much of what I value in games. Strong mix of routing with mean randomness to offset you, committal controls, all about positioning and movement, very snappy and immediate, well paced.

I will never understand Suck To Target defense. It's a terrible mechanic even in Spikeout/God Hand where it only barely changes your direction, even THEN ambiguity can screw u over. The best you can say is that it's a necessary evil because manual aiming would be too precise
