The music in the first Thief game is completely magical within the game (probably my favorite soundtrack) but sounds like hot garbage outside of it. I don't think there's a game that highlights the principle of "it works in the right context" more than that game.

Everytime I have to use widgets in Unreal I'm filled with dread. It's the most inconsistent, poorly put together nonsense I have ever had the displeasure of working with. Reason #1562: There is simply no way of hiding a drop down menu. Full stop. You can't. The slate function is not accessible.

Games in recent memory where you have a voice or character stuck inside your head: Cyberpunk, Baldurs Gate III, Tainted Grail, Thief VR. Is this going to be the trend of the decade? Like how every single protagonist from the 2010s was somehow extremely proficient at using a bow and arrow.

Broadening this to mean "spending whatever to get a thingamabob" then that's both easy to do and there are tons of examples of games that don't have that.

I'm no apologist for generative AI but there seems to be a confusion among people who can't tell the difference between generative AI and AI in general. If a studio uses an AI trained on their own data to track bugs, sort through large data sets etc. That's totally fine.

I agree with this for aesthetic reasons. As a former pixel artist this is my biggest gripe. I have this irrational aversion to mixelart (as it is known) because it reminds me of flash games and the like. I think it's unprofessional. It triggers the same part of my brain as this image.

I don't really follow the game awards but I curiously looked up the award categories. I was kinda surprised that they don't have categories for technical innovation. That's really odd to me because games are such a technical medium. Maybe they don't like reading technical research papers.

Played Heroes Olden Era (it's been the only game I've looked forward to for some time). Almost 4 hours in and I think the game have extreme pacing issues due to the frequency in which it presents new choices to the player.

Indie developers are really funny. They don't need anyone else to tear them apart, they do it to themselves. The Silksong pricing discussion is one of the dumbest things ever.

One thing that stands out with the elder scrolls that I think they practically stand alone with (among the heavy hitters of fantasy) is the way they treat history. And I'm not really talking about the way they use unreliable narrators or conflicting perspectives or what have you.

You can break the entire promise of those AI game/interactive world-generators (like mirage or google genie) with one simple question: "Ok so what if I want to move that tree over there a bit to the left? How do I do that?".

Saving and loading cells now work, including spawning items into any given cell and having it register correctly. With a combination of spawners (designer placed) and cached entity lists (dynamically added/removed) I can save & retrieve items from a specific level trivially. #gamedev #unrealengine
