Time for #LastFourWatched Friday. (I am slowly coming around to getting a Letterboxd. I think I may have some website version of toxoplasmosis.) Been busy this week, so no surprises. But what a line up, some new favs and some old classics.

The only movie I walked out of in the last decade was Stuber (2019). I'm not a comedy person, but I can't imagine many people finding it that funny.

If we look at the chart of Bug Movies, this goes dead center. It has criticisms of capitalism. It has nuclear waste making monsters. It isn't really about anything. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

This is like the ur-Drive In film. Also they accidentally resurrect the titular spider with rock music. It is a pretty good time, no doubt.

Neil Werewolves

This version of Body Snatchers always made me think of the relationship between 'Americanism' individuality and the process of military indoctrination. Like, I feel the film could have done more with the link between armed services and conformity. (Has been a while since my last watch tho.)

Did I ever tell the story of how 11-year old me traumatized a nanny by going to see Red Dragon? Man, I wonder what it would have been like to ever be normal lol.

It's a start, but hit me up when we're back to big studios making 80-something minute horror movies on the regular again.

Had to update the 'Bug Movie Infographic' chart again to add Squirm. Because we're serious movie people here.

Squirm is such a weird movie. But it goes full force by the end, with just... so many worms lol. It's a little slow and formulaic, but the ending was worth the ride.

If they cut out all the pandering sappy subplots, focused on the action, and gave us a notable main character, it would have been more watchable.

A favourite but underrated Sam Neill role for me was the villain in Daybreakers, he portrayed such a cold "vampire as metaphor for capitalist" type character. Very fun movie.

#nowwatching Event Horizon (1997) It's striking to me just how much horror is in Sam Neill's career. We're back in the scifi horror crossover, before Jason X killed this experiment. But this has a lot of love for the horrors of space. Such fine details and stunning visuals. This one holds up well.

No, for real though, this is like the second time Ive cried about Sam Neill. Man...

We say goodbye to the versatile Sam Neill. Whether he was a despicable villain or a dedicated paleontologist dodging dinosaurs, Neill brought warmth and natural charisma to his characters in a career spanning more than five decades. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

#nowwatching Jurassic Park (1993) What is there to say? A perfect storm film; great book, great actors, a director at his prime and the special effects right were they need to be. A great cast too. And of course starring Sam Neill. Quietly, one of the greats and a favorite of mine. Rest in peace.
