A too large proportion of tenured folks refuse to acknowledge the crisis of precarious in higher ed. However. In a moment when the ability of anyone to speak publicly without repercussion is under threat and all university admins push precarity, abandoning the best protection is not the way.

But, because I’m seeing some other posts that disagree, I feel I have to add that ‘tenure is sufficient’ is a straw argument here. The point I’m making is that it is misguided to give up a source of strength during a struggle. The point of the struggle is to build on strength—expand it.

Academic freedom is not a panacea and inothing without a robust and proactive defense, but it is a principle that has, in concrete terms, allowed me to keep my job despite the Palestine Exception. Similarly, tenure is the *principle* of job security in its highest concrete form. A universal good.

IME, faculty who are going to say difficult things in public don’t wait for tenure; plenty of profs talk a good game in private all the way to retirement. Unions need active memberships because when execs are recycled they become a private space that reproduces rather than changing this dynamic.

Not entering the tenure discourse beyond to say: 1) unions are crucial 2) from experience (...sigh), those with TT/T jobs have way more power than they'd like to admit to fix things, and 3) I'd personally love for more solidarity from TT/T professors
