This cognitive dissonance Whitefolk feel seeing what America is vs. their optimistically-moralized mirage of it should be sympathized with. When you're not raised with the logics of solidarity and mutualism, it's easy to feel like you're suffering alone. But you're not: we're in this together 🌻

American Whiteness built itself through ownership of the self as property, but they then suffer alone because their freedom—even for those who don't own much—is designed to isolate and privatize pain. Black survival has always been relational, where every Black person IS because we together ARE.

We make art, music, and creative connection as a form of political expression when every other platform to speak out on silences us. By making something from an imagination informed by struggle—making it together with those surviving beside us—we validate our struggle when others would dismiss it.

We then tell our stories, passing down narratives of lived experiences as a form of activist memory work. We recognize the dead attachments to institutions that have failed us to free ourselves from dependent political desire—redirecting hope from institutions into relationships and mutual care.

The first step is recognizing that despair as a piece of our consciousness. When reality contradicts our sense of moral order, we name it. We don't take that contradiction as structural death, we lived and moved in its wake—steering in the wreckage rather than waiting to be rescued.

We weren't waiting on America to revert to "normal," we were building our own America. From the Freedmen's schools to mutual aid through the Black church, from Garvey's Black economic cooperatives to Fannie Lou Hamer's Freedom Farm collective... it was community that pulled us through.

The White privilege of political hope is not naivete, but a practice. In the same vein, Black political hopelessness is its own practice that historically reframes despair as a catalyst for community survival rather than surrender. Despite centuries of Black struggle, we've persisted. Here's how:

White privilege is finding comfort in the illusion of an imagined American morality that buffers Whitefolk from political hopelessness. Trump didn't break the system—at least to the degree White liberals panic over—he broke this illusion of a "good" America. What they mourn, we have inhabited.

It's offensive hearing Whitefolk (esp. those in power) say "this isn't America" because the rest of us know this as distinctly American. They're mourning America out of for the sake of how Trump's America makes them look/feel rather than for injustice—but that denial is catching up with reality.

[ Healthy reframing 🧵 ] For Whitefolk, this is the first time many have felt this politically hopeless. Hope is White intergenerational privilege—hopelessness is Black intergenerational trauma. White hopelessness is cyclical, ours is structural. What they see as deviation, we know as its norm.
