“The Caring Hand,” by Eva Oertli and Beat Huber, at Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. The sculpture park uses art and historical artifacts to provide a unique view into the lives and legacies of enslaved people.

This original dwelling that enslaved people lived in is one of two structures transported from an Alabama cotton plantation to Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. Built in 1860, the dwellings are among only a handful that have been preserved.

For over three centuries of slavery in the U.S., enslaved Black people were denied full autonomy over their own names. In the first census after Emancipation—the 1870 census—newly emancipated Black Americans were finally able to express their freedom by adopting surnames that were recorded.

While nearly half of all enslaved people had family members who were sold away and suffered brutal separation, most never gave up hope of reconnecting. An exhibit at Freedom Monument Sculpture Park presents ads placed by formerly enslaved people looking for family members who were sold away.

By the time slavery was formally abolished in 1865, nearly 10 million Black people had been enslaved in the U.S. Close to six million of those people died as enslaved people. Their lives are honored and remembered at Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. Plan your visit at legacysites.eji.org

A monument outside the Peace and Justice Memorial Center commemorates people who were killed in racially motivated attacks during the 1950s.

During the segregation era, cities and states throughout the U.S. passed discriminatory laws that codified white supremacy and ordered racial separation in major and mundane segments of everyday life.

At the heart of Freedom Monument Sculpture Park sits the National Monument to Freedom. Featuring over 100,000 family names recorded in the 1870 census, the National Monument to Freedom honors the millions of Black people who were enslaved in the U.S. and their descendants who are still alive today.

During segregation, local officials used poll tests to disenfranchise Black people across the South. Sample poll tests at the Legacy Museum illustrate just how arbitrary and humiliating the questions were.
