L'shana tova to my Jewish friends and family. To those who call themselves Christian but dislike Jews (and they're especially vocal and influential at the moment) do remember that Jesus and his closest followers all celebrated Rosh Hashanah or Feast of Trumpets.

60 years ago I was with my dad in Hackney when a group of men walked past. One of them suddenly said, "Oi, Phil!" It was Ron Kray with his brother Reg. They knew dad from their boxing days in the east-end. They were very affectionate and gave me some money as a gift. Dad never told me who they were.

I disagreed with Charlie Kirk on so very much but a truly free, liberal, and good society is based on such disagreement. His murder is not only a vile act in itself but an attack on the very culture and politics that all genuine progressives should advocate.

Routine and brief procedure at hospital today but why oh why did I need a hairnet?!

We should be able to condemn the killing of innocent Palestinians in Gaza and weep; be able to condemn the killing of innocent Israelis on a Jerusalem bus and weep. Seems, alas, that many can't. Some true motives and hatreds haves become apparent today.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Crecy in 1346 in which the English battered the French. Could have been worse of course - a few years later the French would be ruled by King Charles VI who was convinced he was made entirely of glass. And the 100 Years War actually lasted 116 years.

Almost all of the Jewish members of my family, and most of my Jewish friends, are either vehemently opposed to Israeli actions or (and this is deeply relevant and important) have no connection with or interest in Israel. This can't be unique.

Just saw a mouse. Told my wife. She wasn't pleased. Me: "They're far more scared of you than you of them." Wife: "Ah, no. It's about equal."

5.30am. Large mug of coffee and homemade muffin. Perfect. Put them on desk, went to get a book, came back to see her finishing the muffin. Love is tested but holds firm. Just.

Our second grandchild is due any moment and my wife is in Ottawa for a month with our daughter and son-in-law. I'm watching the entire Inspector Morse for the 27th time and living on tinned ravioli and pasta. Not a bad life actually.

Wish I could speak to my dad this Father's Day and tell him, thank him, so much more than I did. A working-class man who worked all hours to provide for us. And even taught me how to smoke! Love you dad.

Bugger! I thought I was "larping" as a handsome 23-year-old football star. On a serious note, while condemnation of Israel in Gaza is one thing, hatred of Jews is quite another. I receive this sort of garbage all the time but often find liberal, well-meaning non-jewish friends have no idea at all.
