To say Puerto Rico is part of the United States and leave it at that is to see the geopolitics with rose-colored glasses. In the Insular Cases it was decided that we are merely *of* the United States yet not “an organ of the body” of the US empire. So what does that mean? Well,

We are legally owned by the US. We are a colony of the US, and we are the property of the US Congress. We do not have birthright citizenship: only statutory citizenship which could be revoked simply by passing a new law.

That is to say Puerto Ricans are certainly at some risk of deportation that is worth mentioning. Particularly in this political climate!

It’s especially the case when all that’s required these days is looking too brown to some ICE agent and next thing you know you’re on a plane to who-knows-where before the courts have a chance to say a thing about it. Sure, maybe I get brought back. Eventually?
