Today's lesson in pointless security: Digitally signed PDFs cannot be merged w/o the signatures disappearing. Apparently, merging is a disallowed modification. How do I know this? NIH returned the merged Other Support docs on our multi-PI RPPR because the signatures had disappeared 🤡

Nature forgives. Rabbits decapitated the seedlings, bugs destroyed the zucchini and heat made the basil bolt. But we persevered - added chicken wire fencing, more compost and plenty of TLC. This was today's haul. No bushels of tomatoes this year, but a small harvest is better than no harvest. 🙏

Progressive purity tests is what has brought us here. I see folks on here policing how we voice our frustration in the face of tragedy. Unfortunately, everything is political now and I didn't choose for it to be this way.

The frustration I'm seeing in comments is not that anyone deserves this. But that we knew this was coming. And that it will continue to get worse. It is important to draw the connections when they are relevant and impactful.

I made Trinidadian "doubles" - channa (chickpeas) on two pieces of bara (yeasty sweetish dough, quickly fried in very hot oil). Typically served on wax paper which is swung shut and crimped at the ends (very messy!). My version is tamely served on plates. The Caribbean hot sauces make the dish!

I think we need to remember this is a war on expertise at a critical moment in time when our definition of expertise was becoming more expansive and equitable. This makes the link between the attack on expertise/science and attempts to re-segregate much more clear.

The pact of the federal govt with universities was not a handout. It was a strategic decision to boost US leadership in technology, defense, and health. And it paid dividends. In tech, internet, in cancer drugs (for example), No other sector has invested in high risk high reward ideas like US govt.
