Michel Arrignon, co-founder of the Ensemble Intercontemporain and cherished clarinettist, has passed away at 76. A pioneer of modernism, he brought 20th-century masterpieces to life and was deeply inspired by his work with Pierre Boulez.

Since it was my birthday last week, I bought myself a present: a new contrabass clarinet mouthpiece from JD Woodwinds. 3D printed, and 1/3 of the price of other models. Arrived from the US in less than a week. And it plays like a dream. Agility + dynamic control are up 10x.

Spent all day recording Meredith Monk on my glorious contrabass clarinet and I love playing it so much and please can more people book me to do so? Please? I really don’t get to take her out often enough. She’s low and a bit farty and really just delightful.

You can’t measure the worth of writing by views. Most of the finest articles I’ve ever had the joy to commission & edit for tQ are nowhere near our most read. Every publication that has gone slutty for page views has also gone shit - it’s a race to the bttm, that’s the rules.

Sixteen years since my first major gig in new music: playing at an award ceremony for Louis Andriessen with Kate Ledger. Louis teased me about the coffee I'd spilled on my score and I was no doubt incredibly nervous, but he was very kind and we'd worked so hard on this very old piece of his.

Been worried for quite some time that I've got coeliac disease (it runs in the family) but I'd cut out gluten during the pando and you have to have it in the system to be tested. Eight weeks ago I reintroduced (and successfully!) and took the test, and I'm clear! Huge relief.

Registration for Darmstadt has now opened: get in there new music friends, it does tend to fill up pretty fast and it's going to be so good. (And I'm teaching!) I found the 2008 course *transformative* as a student so I can't recommend going enough (also: it's overwhelming, prepare for that!).

I feel like in the gap between when I left The Other Place and when I joined up here I forgot how to do this kind of short form posting. Or: because I have so few posts each one feels more infused with meaning? Either way, finding it difficult to actually post things. Much hesitation.
