It's #WorldPhageWeek! (Oct 22-28) Bacteriophages - viruses that hunt bacteria - are the most abundant organisms on earth. At the IOI, researchers explore how phage therapy could be a simple, low-cost alternative to antibiotics. Because in the future fight against AMR, all the world's a phage!🌍

Fast, affordable diagnostic tests could limit the spread of antimicrobial resistance (#AMR). They identify bacteria & their resistance levels, so patients get the right antibiotic. Oxford DPhil student Natasha Salant uses mathematical models to see how these may affect AMR in the UK and Malawi.

#AMR is a constantly rising threat, and this WHO report highlights the very real dangers of drug resistant infections worldwide. We're losing our most important antibiotics. New drug discovery and global surveillance of AMR are more important than ever.

DPhil students Amrita Pondit & Saifur Rahman have collected >2,800 bacterial isolates to add to Bangladesh’s national AMR Surveillance dataset. Low- and middle- income countries bear the heaviest #AMR burden, and this data will help clinicians choose the right antibiotics for patients.

These alarming results highlight just how important it is that we strengthen antibiotic resistance (AMR) surveillance around the world, and keep innovating in the field of drug discovery.

Low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) face the highest burden of AMR, but our data mostly comes from high-income countries. DPhil students Saifur Rahman and Amrita Pondit are helping to change this. They collected bacterial samples in Bangladesh, to help strengthen AMR research in the area.

Researchers studying antimicrobial use in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia have found many ill children are given antibiotics unnecessarily. The CHAIN Network is researching the treatment of vulnerable children in these settings.
