Global estimates say that 45 million children under five are severely malnourished. The IOI and MSF recently examined children being treated at a hospital site in Niger. They found the children carried high levels of drug resistant bacteria, which could lead to life-threatening infections.

An IOI scientific lead has expressed concern over the removal of key bacteria from the WHO's high-priority list. One removed strain is the most common bacterial cause of food poisoning. These bacteria can be especially harmful in low-and-middle income countries, where AMR surveillance is limited.

An IOI surveillance project has helped reduce newborn deaths in some Nigerian hospitals. In one hospital, infant mortality went down by almost 50%. These findings offer important lessons for research funders, health institutions, and partners to ensure sustainability of surveillance projects.
