Donald Trump signed an executive order shuttering the #Education Department. That's not how this works.

Over 1,300 federal staff - including nearly half of the Office for Civil Rights - were fired in McMahon's massacre last night, as she sets her sights on dismantling the whole Education Department.

GLSEN: "The American people are looking for leaders who will stand up for their principles and stand by their communities. Now is not the time for allies in elected office to lose their courage.”

GLSEN: "No matter the rhetoric coming out of Washington, Congressional Republicans cannot erase the contributions of transgender students from their school communities."

Trump is trying to bully states into excluding students, but some state leaders are pushing back. Trans kids have rights, and political appointees should not be using federal funds for schools as a bargaining chip to weaken civil rights laws. Maine's Governor Janet Mills: "We'll see you in court."

One month in, Trump has weaponized the federal government to silence diversity in schools. But LGBTQ+ students have rights, and schools should not shirk from enforcing those rights due to inappropriate pressure from political appointees.

Trump has relied on executive orders to intimidate institutions - like hospitals and schools - to adopt trans-exclusionary policies. As trans youth assert their rights, the courts are showing that Trump's orders are all bark and no bite.

Linda McMahon was before a Senate committee today. She's nominated to be the next Secretary of Education, the federal official responsible for enforcing civil rights laws in schools. Students need a champion who will fight for their future, not a crony who will work to dismantle their protections.
