A little update on my deck building wedding game (Wedding Planic) I made this video to capture some of the stuff that I didn’t just break on my last major refactor 😅🥲 Indie Dev Life.

Figuring out the design language for all of the possible outcomes of card placements in my indie roguelike card game. Still work in progress because I’m off to have a beer with some other developers! But here’s some images my work so far…

A little video I put together to show some of my progress on Wedding Planic! A lot of the functionality is in place, I’m getting ready to make the actual deck of peeps and start balancing the gameplay loop. Still a mountain of animation and UI to do 😅 solo indie dev is… hard.

In a toxic relationship with Cult Simulator. I must have played 100s of hours. I still don’t know what I’m doing. I refuse to google it. The only “victory condition” I’ve managed is to get old, unfulfilled at a desk job. I think about the game all day. I think I love it and I think I hate it.

This is super dumb, I've never tried to release a solo game before and have so much to do before I go anywhere near Steam - so I set up a substack so that WIP posts aren't time wasted. I got my first real sub today and I know it's the smallest of starts but I feel really happy about it.

Every week: "Wow. That was refreshingly candid" "Thanks for being so candid" "Ha! We can always rely on you to be brutally candid" I'm not trying to, I just find it impossible not to either: a) just say the thing I'm thinking b) run, hide and avoid the person entirely Am I missing a diagnosis...?

My husband got me this for Christmas. I opened it and gasped “omg! The pattern! This looks so expensive!” He replied: “yes! You can tell it’s expensive because of how complicated the pattern is!” His mum was totally bewildered. #iykyk

I’m old, cynical and nothing fills me with any form of joy because *gestures* Then I see a video of Jensen, Jared and Misha announcing a reunion in The Boys and I’m a happy little imp again. Fandoms are great. I forgot how nice it is to just give a shit about something so stupid. 🤓 #supernatural

I haven’t networked in a long time, but I’m pretty sure the reaction to being asked to connect on LinkedIn shouldn’t be abject terror.

A Next Fest demo is onto a winner when it ends and your heart sinks because you can’t play on. This is one to watch! A perfect mix of stuff we know and love with new and interesting ideas. I love the room building mechanic, it reminds me of Castles of Mad King Ludwig and I wish I’d thought of it!

Reader: there are 4 acts in the Slay The Spire Board game. At best this is going to take me 6 hours to do one run through. 💀

Dunder Mifflin in Meta Horizons could have been awesome. But I just found myself shouting at an office full of kids like they were my dumb interns going “No, Kelly Kapoor’s desk is in the nook! Deliver the package there!” and I caught myself like wtf am I doing with my life I need to touch grass.

Art iteration is good for the soul. Feels like it’s heading in a direction.

To strengthen my knowledge on deck-building mechanics I gathered my IRL games to prep for a big research play sesh. But just discovered that only 3 games from my game mountain actually count. 😱 Don’t worry… I just placed a big order to correct this problem 🤓 Any recommendations I should add?

Some progress on my deck building rogue like game about table planning a disastrous wedding. Mostly refactoring it so that I can start on all the weird card effects and score mults. Things are about to get rather silly.

Was having a low-key freakout because husband's 40th this month and NO IDEA what to get him. But just got targeted an ad for Civ VII. Sid Meier you beautiful bastard I could kiss you on the face.

Been using old cue cards as note paper, NGL I was not expecting to find an entire screenplay on The Lemmings IP midway through the stack. I don’t know why I did this, past me is a geg. Reading through the badly spelled notes I’d pitch this as: “Inside Out meets 1984” Or “Lemmings: The Downfall”

Last year I realised that if I wanted my weird ideas to get built, I had 2 options: 1) learn how to communicate with coders 2) learn c# @johnlfrench.bsky.social, I cannot believe how much c# I learned in a year. You are largely responsible. (And doing 2 helped me be better at 1 so double win)

Another stupid thing I’m working on in my spare time is a rogue-like deck building game where you have to balance a pack of increasingly troublesome wedding guests to make a wedding pop off. Lots of cards and synergies to figure out still but really in love with this idea. Watch this space!
