This is great news. Bradford Council has significantly cut pesticide use in Shipley’s parks and green spaces in response to pressure from the Green councillors, but national legislation is required as well!

Bradford Council’s meeting rolls on this evening. We’ve just called on the government to scrap the two child benefit cap. I was going to sit quietly but felt the need to speak up against this deeply unjust policy - brought in by the Conservatives yet kept in place by Starmer’s Labour government.

I put a Member Question to the Leader of Council at today’s full meeting in Bradford about the terrible state of Shipley’s Station Road. As a result, I’ve secured a commitment from the portfolio holder to consider including this key gateway to Shipley in our town centre’s cleansing schedule.

Nothing like a spot of guerilla gardening to work up an appetite for lunch. This massive overgrowth has obstructed a busy pedestrian route in Shipley for weeks. The owner doesn’t care. It would have taken our dysfunctional council years - literally - to sort. Took me 20 mins. Job done.

Joined fellow Green Cllr Anna Watson and Living Streets leaders Philippa and Pete for a sun-soaked community speedwatch on Caroline Street, Saltaire, this evening. Gathered plenty of traffic data (top speed = 33mph) and got great support from residents!

Great to see the new Residents Only parking bays up and running on Hirst Lane. They’ll ease the parking pressures there and hopefully encourage more parents to walk their children to the nearby nursery and primary school rather than drive.

At last! Great to see the new defibrillator installed by the play area in Hirst Wood. It took a while, but we got there in the end.

I’ve just handed over the chair of the Shipley Area Committee to the Cllr Marcus Dearden. Welcome back Marcus! In Nov, Marcus will pass the baton to Cllr Paul Sullivan, with myself as deputy chair throughout the year. A super example of cross-party cooperation in the interest of our residents!

Green councillor Anna Watson and myself litter-picked our way up from central Shipley earlier today, past the health centre and swimming pool, all the way to the snicket running between Kirkgate and the Bradford Road. Sorted out a few grot spots along the way and dodged the rain showers!

One of this morning’s happy moments - enjoying the green community space by Wycliffe Primary School on John St, now nicely in bloom! Great for parents and residents, and a super example of collaborative working between the local councillors and our amazing community groups!

Spot on. As a teacher who has worked with around 2000 sixth form students in my 27+ year career, all I can say is that we frogmarch young people from one high stakes test to the next rather than focusing primarily on the skills they need most for life.
