I want to clarify my position on D&D: I'm an apologist for it and I know it. D&D is really built to facilitate the "dungeon crawl", which isn't really how anybody plays the game these days. Getting it to do even just your standard Lord of the Rings style high fantasy storytelling takes some tweaking

Trying to reskin dnd into anything else is like trying to repurpose a sewing machine as a coffee maker. It will never do anything but sew. It is designed to only sew and the weight of decades of history is behind that purpose. People will see your weird sewing juice machine and ask why it exists

The correct thing to reskin dnd rules into is Literally Nothing, they are the encrusted seaweed coated dock pillar of ttrpg rules and are so marinated in their own historical juices that you will never free them from the weight of their original context
