In the concentration camp #BergenBelsen, the Nazis tried to erase the traces of their crimes by destroying the camp’s documentation. Of the more than 110,000 prisoners, at least 52,000 died. The names and fates of many of these prisoners are still unknown today.  2/5

A quick analog intermission is shown with #psysicalObjects follows. Although we mainly use #digitalObjects, nobody of us should forget that real human beings are behind all this #data. 9/14

Examples of #3D #interactive #paintings can be seen on this screen. Navigate through one of four drawings by #ErvinAbadi, #LeoKok, or #OttoBierman. Use the #annotations to get more #context and #information about the #camps and #prisoners in the paintings. 8/14

The next one is fully #interactive. You can dive into the #3DScan of the #euthanasieCenter in #Bernburg. The model is scanned with the modern state of the building and enriched with #annotations and #reconstructions, presenting you how it looked like under the Nazis. 5/14

This week, the #MEMORISE_EU project team meets in #Amsterdam at the #NIOD and at #KampWesterbork, the #memorial for the former #concentrationCamp. We opened the newest addition to the exhibit at Kamp Westerbork yesterday. It consists of a short exhibition presenting #MEMORISE to the visitors.

Today, I am visiting the Kamp Westerbork memorial with the @memoriseeu.bsky.social consortium. We are learning about digital initiatives, explore the site of the former camp, and see the new MEMORISE exhibition. #digitalheritage

The museum's exhibition gallery tells the story of Belzec in detail (1), next to it is a dark and empty room for contemplation, which seems to be about the same size as the exhibition gallery (2). 7/7 #waclawszpakowski #Sonderkommando #holocaust #concentrationCampStory #digitalMemory #memorise

The memorial itself can be reached via a path between high walls carved into the #burialSite (1, 2). It ends with lists of #Jewish and #Polish first names (3) embedded in the concrete. This symbolizes the fact that there are no official records of those #murdered. 6/7

The second painting (1) shows the burning of the #corpses on makeshift pyres built from parts of railroad tracks. A replica of such a symbolic pyre can be seen on the site as part of the memorial (2). 5/7

These paintings are now in the archives of the church in #Belzec. The first painting (1) shows the layout of the camp, which was also shielded by a green wall of trees. 4/7

The guide showed us two detailed #paintings created by a Polish railroad worker named Waclaw Kolodziejczyk. He created them with the help of oral accounts of what happened in the #camp, which he had heard from members of the so-called "Sonderkommando". 3/7

On day 2 of our #concentrationcamp #memorial tour, we visited the #AuschwitzIIBirkenau memorial. It was a rainy, intense, and informative #guidedtour. The view from the main watchtower gives a view of the horrific scale of what occurred on this vast site. #auschwitzbirkenau
