It’s #IDPD (International Day of People with Disabilities). Today, I celebrated by discussing the “othering” that goes on in disability service. By which I mean, lots of our team experience #disability, but they don’t acknowledge it because their barriers don’t feel significant compared to others.

The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last three days sharing frustrating news. Today, I need to point out the amazing work being done by the organizers and panelists, my employer, @nanaimoacl.bsky.social, and the disability community, who work tirelessly to address these inequities.

Current panel on post secondary accessibility. I was in university part time recently. I have #ADHD, and had jumped through all the disability hoops. I took an English class. When the midterm essay came, I asked if I could use my phone as a timer, because people with ADHD can’t perceive time well.

Meaningful and resonant. This person shared a video about their experience as a deaf person. The shirt says: “I’m so tired of this s@#t.” I feel ya.

Accessibility is, to me, a measure of removing the distance between a person and a thing they need to thrive. As service providers, we have to ask, always, if that’s what we’re doing. Sometimes good intentions lead to more forks in the road. That’s a reflection for me today. #disability #canada

After two emotionally charged days, it’s nice to be early so I can sit and enjoy a moment of cool air, and be reminded of the intense privilege I enjoy to just have time to think and reflect in such a beautiful place. For people with disabilities who are surviving, time to reflect is a luxury.

When we talk about reconciliation and #community #living, as we face the truths of colonialism, so do we need to face the truths of disability. Two resources have helped me.

Watching a profoundly enraging panel on Track 2 MAiD. It is eugenics. It is genocide. It says that in the absence of service, people with disabilities should just die. Gratitude to the panel who are teaching us about the horror of Bill C7. We all need to step up, here. #canada #MAiD #disability

Disability is big, but it’s also small. On my way to the conference, I passed an Indigenous woman in a wheelchair. It’s pouring rain, here. Her support worker was trying to keep her dry with a small nylon fan. I loaned them my umbrella. It wasn’t a big deal; I only had about 20m to go.

Day two: I have a headache. Got a nosebleed last night at 1am. Brain is going a million miles an hour. #ADHD isn’t all superpowers. That said, I am excited for the day. I just have about 2/3 of my normal spoons. LET’S GET OUR LEARNING ON! #disability #spoons

The #Canada #Disability Benefit panel followed suit with previous panels, pointing out that $2,400/year max is a laughable amount of money that does nothing to lift people out of poverty. Glad that the panelists are being candid about gaps in service and support.

Neither Stephanie Cadieux (Chief Accessibility Officer) nor Neil Belanger (IDC/BCANDS) are confident that we’ll have a barrier free Canada anywhere close to 2040, as the government suggests. Good times.

Canada’s Chief Accessibility Officer Stephanie Cadieux spoke candidly about accessibility in Canada and where we’re at with legislation. One thing she said: “it will not be fast.” That’s a frustration for service providers who are watching people fall through the cracks. It needs to be faster.
